Yes. You need a vignette to drive on Austrian motorways and expressways. It applies to every vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes, including foreign-registered cars, motorhomes and motorcycles. Driving without one risks an on-the-spot substitute toll.
Austria issues a digital vignette, linked to your licence plate. There is no sticker to attach and nothing to collect: enforcement cameras read the plate. That is why the plate you give us has to be exactly right.
Prices start at €9.60 for a 1 day car vignette (official ASFINAG price, verified 2026-08-19).

It is valid on Austria's motorways and expressways. Some routes (the Brenner motorway and several tunnel and alpine roads) carry a separate section toll that a vignette does not cover.
A 1-day or 10-day vignette can start the same day you buy it. A 2-month or annual one cannot: Austrian consumer law gives you a right of withdrawal on an online purchase, and the earliest either can become valid is the 18th day after you buy it (ASFINAG, checked 19 August 2026). If you are leaving sooner than that, take the 10-day.
Toll supervision charges a substitute toll, the Ersatzmaut, and paying it in full and on time closes the matter without a penalty procedure. The deadline depends on how the demand reaches you: on the spot if you are stopped in person, two weeks for a notice left on the vehicle, four weeks for one posted to you. Left unpaid, the penalty that follows can reach 3,000 euro (ASFINAG Help Centre, checked 19 August 2026).
No. The Brenner is a section toll, a Streckenmaut, and so are several alpine tunnels and passes. You pay those at the route itself, on top of the vignette, so a drive south over the Alps costs more than the vignette alone. An east to west run across Austria usually needs nothing extra (ASFINAG, checked 19 August 2026).
Up to fourteen months, because it covers a vignette year rather than twelve months from your purchase. The year opens on 1 December of the previous year and closes on 31 January of the following one, so an annual vignette bought in December runs longer than one bought in June for exactly the same price.
Often, if you hired it in Austria. Usually not, if you hired it across the border. Nothing is displayed on the windscreen to check, so ask the rental desk which plate is registered and for which period. A second vignette on a car that already has one adds nothing: it does not extend or upgrade the first.
Yes, and it is a separate product at a lower official rate, roughly 40 per cent of the car price. A car vignette registered to a motorcycle's plate does not make that motorcycle compliant. Choose Motorcycle as the vehicle type at checkout and the correct product is selected for you.
The vignette belongs to the characters you give us, so a plate with one letter wrong leaves the car you are actually driving uncovered while you believe it is paid for. Enforcement cameras read the plate on the vehicle. We show you the exact characters before you pay: check them against the plate itself, not the rental agreement or the registration document.
