Road charges in Slovakia
Yes. Vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes need an e-vignette to use Slovak motorways and expressways. It is digital and tied to the licence plate.
Motorcycles are exempt in Slovakia. If you are riding, you need nothing and should not buy anything, here or anywhere else.
Slovakia introduced a 1-day vignette for 2026, so short transits no longer require the 10-day product.
Prices start at €8.10 for a 1 day car vignette (official eZnamka price, verified 2026-08-19).
What we do not cover
Vehicles over 3.5 t use Slovakia's separate electronic toll system rather than a vignette, with one exception: a two-track M1 vehicle, which includes a heavy motorhome registered as a passenger vehicle, pays the vignette whatever it weighs. Motorcycles need no vignette at all.
Questions drivers ask
Why do motorcycles need nothing in Slovakia?
Because the charge is written for two-track vehicles, so a motorcycle falls outside it rather than qualifying for a cheaper rate (eZnamka, checked 29 August 2026). There is no Slovak motorcycle vignette to buy at any price. If a site offers you one, it is selling something that does not exist.
Does a caravan or trailer need its own vignette?
No. A car and its trailer count as one vehicle combination, covered by the vignette registered to the car's plate (eZnamka, checked 29 August 2026). That is worth knowing if you are driving on from Switzerland, which charges a trailer in its own right and expects a second vignette for it.
My motorhome weighs more than 3.5 tonnes. Vignette or toll?
A vignette, if it is registered in category M1. Slovakia charges two-track M1 vehicles whatever their permitted weight, so a heavy motorhome registered as a passenger vehicle stays on the vignette rather than moving to the distance-based toll (eZnamka, checked 29 August 2026). Check the category on the registration document before you assume the toll applies.
How far ahead can I set the start date?
Up to 60 days from the day you buy. That limit was 13 days until the current vignette edition raised it (eZnamka, checked 29 August 2026), so a trip two months out can be paid for now. Choose the date carefully: it runs from the day you name whether you travel or not.
What happens if you are caught without one?
Enforcement is run by the National Motorway Company together with the police under Act 488/2013 on Vignette, and both the driver and the vehicle's operator can be pursued. eZnamka does not publish the penalty amounts on its enforcement page, so we do not quote a figure we cannot source: ask eZnamka directly before relying on one.
I entered the plate wrongly. Can I fix it myself?
No. eZnamka treats it as a data adjustment to the vignette payment records, made on request through its website or its customer service line rather than edited in the shop (eZnamka, checked 29 August 2026). Start that before you travel, because until it is done the vignette belongs to the characters as they were entered.
