Road charges in Romania
Yes. The rovinieta is required on most Romanian national roads, not only motorways, which makes it easy to need one without realising. It is electronic and linked to your licence plate.
Romania offers an unusually wide range of periods, including a 60-day option that sits between the monthly and annual products.
Note that the Danube bridges at Fetești-Cernavodă and Giurgiu charge a separate toll that the rovinieta does not cover.

What we do not cover
The rovinieta does not cover the tolled Danube bridges, which are paid separately. We sell category A only; heavier vehicles use higher categories we do not yet offer.
Questions drivers ask
Do I need one if I stay off the motorways?
Almost certainly yes. The charge covers the national road network rather than motorways alone, which is why a scenic route through Romania needs a rovinieta as much as the A1 does. The one relief is inside a town: a national road between the entry and exit signs of a municipality is not charged (Government Ordinance 15/2002, checked 29 August 2026).
What happens if you are caught without a rovinieta?
A contravention fine, and on top of it a compensation charge set under Government Ordinance 15/2002. For a category A vehicle the published range of that charge is 250 to 500 lei (roviniete.ro fine schedule, checked 29 August 2026). Both are billed to the registered keeper, so a hire car reaches you through the rental company with its own admin fee attached.
Are the Danube bridges included?
No, and the one most drivers meet is on the road to the coast: the crossing at Fetești-Cernavodă on the way to Constanța is charged separately from the rovinieta, as is the bridge at Giurgiu into Bulgaria. Pay those at the crossing itself. Budget for both directions if you are coming back the same way.
How do I check the rovinieta is really registered?
CNAIR runs a public check by registration number on erovinieta.ro, which reads the same register the enforcement cameras read. Use it after any purchase, ours included: a rovinieta is only ever a record in that database, so the check is the only proof that matters. Keep the confirmation reference as well.
What changes in October 2026?
Romania has legislated a replacement road-charging scheme, currently due that month, which is expected to price in lei and to vary by emission class rather than by vehicle category alone. Until it starts, everything on this page holds. We re-verify Romanian prices against CNAIR before the date rather than after it.
Which product suits a stay of a few weeks?
The 60-day rovinieta, which sits between the 30-day and the annual and has no equivalent in most of Europe: elsewhere the choice jumps from a month straight to a year. For a summer spent in Romania it is usually cheaper than an annual and less fiddly than renewing a monthly one.
