Road charges in Bulgaria
Yes. An e-vinetka is required on Bulgaria's tolled road network for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. It is digital and linked to your licence plate.
Bulgaria offers an unusually fine-grained range, from a single day up to a full year, including a 3-month product.
The same prices apply to foreign-registered cars as to Bulgarian ones.
Prices start at €5.30 for a 1 day car vignette (official the Road Infrastructure Agency price, verified 2026-08-28).
What we do not cover
Bulgaria also sells a weekend vignette valid from Friday midday to Sunday night. Because it is fixed to a specific weekend rather than a start date you choose, we do not offer it. Buy it directly if it suits your trip. Motorcycles do need a vignette in Bulgaria at a lower rate, which we do not yet sell.
Questions drivers ask
What happens if you are caught without an e-vinetka?
A compensatory charge of 46.50 euro for a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes, payable within 14 days. Pay it in that window and the matter ends without an administrative penalty; miss it and the record takes effect as a fine of 153.39 euro, which is 300 leva (Road Infrastructure Agency, checked 29 August 2026).
What do I show at a roadside check?
Nothing. Bulgaria has been fully electronic since 1 January 2019, and the Road Infrastructure Agency states that owners are not obliged to produce any document proving the purchase. Officers read the plate and query the register. Keep your confirmation reference for your own records rather than for them.
Does a campervan pay the vignette or the toll?
The vignette. Bulgaria moved campers off the distance-based toll and onto the e-vinetka, so a motorhome buys what a car buys (Road Infrastructure Agency, checked 29 August 2026). That is the opposite of the direction most countries take with larger vehicles, so check it rather than assuming your motorhome owes a toll.
How do I check the e-vinetka is registered?
The Road Infrastructure Agency publishes a validity check by registration number on bgtoll.bg. Use it after any purchase, ours included: the e-vinetka exists only as a record against your plate, so a database that says yes is the only confirmation worth having before you drive.
Should I buy the weekend vignette instead?
If your trip really is a weekend one, yes, and buy it directly from the Road Infrastructure Agency rather than from us. It runs from Friday midday to Sunday night on a fixed weekend rather than from a start date you pick, which is why it is not in our range. We would rather say so than sell you a longer product.
My vehicle is over 3.5 tonnes. Does it need an e-vinetka?
No. Bulgaria runs two systems side by side, and a vehicle above 3.5 tonnes belongs to the distance-based toll rather than to the vignette. We sell vignettes only, so nothing here covers a heavy vehicle. Arrange the toll through the Road Infrastructure Agency or a toll service provider before you travel.
