Germany to Bulgaria by car: the e‑vignettes for each way there

Germany charges a car nothing and Bulgaria sells an e‑vignette against the plate. In between there are three ways: through Austria, Hungary and Serbia, the same line with Czechia and Slovakia in place of Austria, or through Hungary and Romania over the Danube at Vidin. Serbia charges at barriers and Romania needs a rovinieta of its own, which is why the count of e‑vignettes differs.

The drive

Three e‑vignettes, Austrian, Hungarian and Bulgarian, on the shortest way on paper and almost all of it motorway. Serbia sells no e‑vignette: you take a ticket at the first barrier and pay by distance where you leave, in dinar, in euro or by card, so nothing for Serbia goes in the cart. Serbia is outside the Schengen area, so allow for passport control at Röszke and at Kalotina, in both directions.

The drive

Four e‑vignettes, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian and Bulgarian, on the direct line from Berlin and the east of Germany. It joins the Austrian line at Budapest and follows the M5 to Röszke, so from there on it is the same drive: Serbian barrier tolls paid on the road, then Bulgaria from Kalotina. All four e‑vignettes are linked to the same plate, so check it once before you buy them together.

The drive

Four e‑vignettes, with a Romanian rovinieta in place of the Serbian tolls, and the one way that stays inside the Schengen area all the way. Romania charges on its national roads as well as its motorways, so the rovinieta runs from Nădlac to the Danube whichever road you take. The Calafat to Vidin bridge charges its own fee at the crossing, which no e‑vignette covers and which we do not sell.

Costed for a return trip that leaves one day and comes back 7 days later, so the destination is covered for all 8 calendar days and every country on the way is crossed twice. A longer stay moves a country to a longer e‑vignette and changes the total: the planner works out your own dates.
