Road charges in Hungary
Yes. You need an e-matrica to drive on Hungary's motorways. It applies to foreign-registered vehicles exactly as it does to Hungarian ones, and enforcement is automatic and camera-based.
Hungary's vignette is fully digital and linked to your licence plate, so there is nothing to display in the windscreen. The plate and the country of registration you give us must match the vehicle exactly.
Hungary prices in forint. We show the official forint price alongside the euro amount we charge, so you can always see what the road operator actually charges.
Prices start at HUF 5,550 for a 1 day car vignette (official NÚSZ price, verified 2026-08-19).
What we do not cover
The e-matrica covers Hungary's tolled motorway network. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes use a separate distance-based system (HU-GO), and county (megyei) vignettes cover only one county rather than the whole country. We sell the national vignettes.
Questions drivers ask
What does it cost to be caught without an e-matrica?
A surcharge of 27,790 forint if you settle it within 60 days, and 95,730 forint after that (NUSZ tariff under ministerial decree 45/2020, checked 29 August 2026). It is a surcharge rather than a police fine, it is billed to the registered keeper, and a foreign plate is pursued in the same way as a Hungarian one.
Do I need a separate vignette for a trailer?
Not if your vehicle takes a D1 vignette: towing is included and the trailer needs nothing of its own. A vehicle in D2 is different, and a trailer behind it needs a category U vignette bought separately (NUSZ, checked 29 August 2026). Check which category your vehicle falls in before you tow anything into Hungary.
Is my car D1 or D2?
Seats decide it, not weight. D1 is an M1 vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes with no more than seven seats including the driver's; a vehicle of the same weight with eight or nine seats is D2 and pays more (NUSZ, checked 29 August 2026). A seven-seat people carrier is the borderline case worth counting properly.
Would a county vignette be cheaper?
Much cheaper, and much narrower. A county e-matrica costs 7,190 forint against 61,760 forint for the national annual one (NUSZ tariff, checked 29 August 2026), but it covers the motorways of that one county only, so a route crossing three counties needs three of them. We sell the national vignettes; buy county ones direct if your driving really stays in one place.
Does an e-matrica work the moment it is bought?
Hungary's rule is that validity starts at the day, hour and minute of the purchase itself, with no waiting period of the kind Austria applies to its longer vignettes. Since we register the vignette on your behalf, the time that counts is the one on your confirmation, which is why we send the reference as soon as the purchase goes through.
When does the annual e-matrica actually run out?
On 31 January of the year after the one it was bought for, not twelve months after your purchase. An annual vignette bought in November therefore covers a good deal less driving than the same one bought in February. If your trip falls near the turn of the year, check which vignette year you are buying.
