Hungarian e-vignette for caravans, trailers and motorhomes: D1, D2 and U

Does a caravan, trailer or motorhome need its own Hungarian e-vignette?

A car in category D1, an M1 vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes with no more than seven seats, tows a caravan or trailer without any vignette for it. A vehicle in category D2 needs a D2 e-vignette, and a trailer behind it needs a separate category U one. A motorhome is D1 or D2 by the same rules as a car.

Three fields on the registration certificate decide the category

NÚSZ reads the category off field J (vehicle category), F.1 (maximum authorised mass) and S.1 (seats, including the driver's) of the registration certificate, never off what the vehicle is used for or how many people are in it (e-vignette rates and frequently asked questions, checked 14 October 2026).

Find those three fields before buying, because they are what an inspection compares the vignette against.

  • D1: field J reads M1 or M1G, up to 3,500 kg, no more than seven seats. Its trailers are included.
  • D2: field J reads M1 with eight or more seats, whatever is actually carried.
  • D2: field J reads N1 or N1G, up to 3,500 kg, whatever the number of seats.
  • D2: field J reads M1 or M1G and the mass is over 3,500 kg.
  • D1M: motorcycles.
  • U: a trailer or caravan (O1 or O2) towed by a D2 vehicle.

A caravan behind a car needs nothing; behind a D2 it needs a U

If the towing vehicle is D1, no separate e-vignette is needed for the trailer or caravan. If it is D2, the towing vehicle needs a D2 e-vignette and the trailer a category U one as well (Hungarian Public Roads Toll Division, checked 14 October 2026).

The U vignette can be bought in two ways. Against the trailer's own plate, it lets that trailer run behind any D2 vehicle that has its own vignette. Against the towing vehicle's plate, it covers whatever trailer that vehicle pulls, and the trailer's plate needs nothing. A U vignette costs the same as a D1 one of the same length on the 2026 rates.

A family car with a caravan, the common case on the way to Lake Balaton, therefore buys one D1 vignette for the car's plate and nothing else.

Motorhomes and converted vans: field J decides, not the word camper

Since 1 January 2026 every motorhome is in the e-vignette system, and one over 3.5 tonnes needs a D2 vignette (e-vignette frequently asked questions, checked 14 October 2026). A motorhome registered M1 or M1G is D2 above 3.5 tonnes and D1 up to 3.5 tonnes with no more than seven seats, like a car (NÚSZ category guide for RVs and caravans, 2026).

A van converted into a camper is where drivers go wrong. If the certificate still reads N1, it is D2 at any weight up to 3.5 tonnes, even at 3.2 tonnes with two seats. If field J is empty and the certificate does not describe the vehicle as a passenger vehicle in its own language, the operator also requires D2.

Read field J on the camper's certificate before you buy, and buy D2 whenever it does not say M1 or M1G.

Too low a category is surcharged; too high is not

If an inspection finds a vignette for a lower category than the vehicle's, the operator charges a differential surcharge. A vignette for a higher category than needed is not surcharged (Hungarian Public Roads Toll Division, checked 14 October 2026).

When the certificate leaves you unsure between D1 and D2, D2 is the one that cannot be surcharged.

What we sell for these vehicles

toll.one sells the D1 vignette for a car or a motorhome up to 3.5 tonnes with seven seats or fewer, caravan included, on the Hungarian e-vignette options page, and the D1M one described in the Hungarian motorcycle e-vignette guide.

We do not currently sell D2 or U. Buy those at the official shop, ematrica.nemzetiutdij.hu. A goods vehicle over 3.5 tonnes is not in the e-vignette system at all; the Hungarian HGV toll guide covers it.
