Hungarian county vignettes (megyei matrica): who needs one

Is a Hungarian county vignette enough for my trip?

Rarely, for a visitor. A county e-matrica covers the toll motorways of one county, up to the first junction in the next, from purchase until 31 January of the following year. A transit or a holiday route crosses several counties, so it needs a national daily, 10-day or monthly vignette instead.

One county, a whole year

Every county with a toll motorway sells an annual county e-matrica; Nógrád has none because it has no toll motorway. It is valid on that county's toll expressways and on to the first junction past the county border, from purchase until midnight on 31 January of the following year (Hungarian Public Roads Toll Division, checked 14 October 2026). A county vignette bought in December for the next year starts on 1 January.

Anyone may buy one for any county, not only residents, and as many counties as they like for the same plate. It is sold in categories D1, D2 and U; a motorcycle buys the D1 one. There is no separate vignette for Budapest: the motorways inside the city boundary but outside its built-up area, such as parts of the M0, are covered by Pest county's.

Treat it as a product for someone who drives the same few motorways all year.

The 2026 prices, and the M1 regional vignette

A county e-matrica costs 7,190 Ft in D1 and 14,370 Ft in D2 for 2026. Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén's is reduced to 2,500 Ft in D1 for the year, to make up for the closure of the M30 between Miskolc and Szikszó (e-vignette rates, checked 14 October 2026).

New for 2026, the M1 regional e-vignette covers the toll expressways of four counties together, Pest, Fejér, Komárom-Esztergom and Győr-Moson-Sopron, for 15,000 Ft in D1. Like a county vignette it is annual.

Compare either with the national annual e-vignette only if you drive in Hungary through most of the year.

Why a transit driver wants the national vignette

A drive across Hungary towards Romania, Serbia, Croatia or Ukraine passes through several counties, and each one needs its own county vignette. A single county vignette in D1 already costs more than a national 10-day one on the 2026 rates, and every county vignette is a full year's product bought for a few hours of driving.

For a single crossing buy the 1-day e-vignette; for a holiday, the 10-day e-vignette. Both cover the whole national network, so the route can change without a new purchase.

Driving past the county you paid for

Beyond the first junction in the next county, a county vignette no longer counts. A driver who goes further by mistake has 60 minutes from entering the uncovered section to buy a vignette for it before a surcharge applies (Hungarian Public Roads Toll Division, checked 14 October 2026).

A county vignette cannot be exchanged for another county or for a national one, and unlike a national vignette it cannot be redeemed before it starts. It can be moved to another vehicle, but only within the same region, in the operator's words.

Check the operator's county maps for the exact junctions before relying on one.

We sell national vignettes only

toll.one does not sell county or M1 regional vignettes, because they are only safe to sell to someone who knows exactly which counties their driving stays in. Buy them at the official shop, ematrica.nemzetiutdij.hu, or from a Hungarian reseller.

Every national length we sell is on the Hungarian e-vignette options page.
