Hungarian e-vignette validity: start date, 10-day and monthly

When does a Hungarian e-vignette start and stop being valid?

An e-matrica bought for today is valid from the day, hour and minute the purchase completes, so it can be bought this morning and used this morning. One bought for a later start date runs from that date. The 10-day covers the start day and the nine after it, and the monthly runs to the same date in the following month.

Bought for today, it starts at the minute of purchase

NÚSZ's rule is that an e-vignette bought within its validity period starts at the time of purchase, to the day, hour and minute (Hungarian Public Roads Toll Division, checked 14 October 2026). There is no waiting period between paying and being covered.

The operator also says that only the confirmation message is proof of the right to use the road. Its advice is to drive onto a tolled section only once that message has arrived and the plate, country code and category on it are correct.

Buy before the first tolled motorway, and check the confirmation before you join it.

A start date set in advance covers that whole day

The daily, 10-day and monthly vignettes start at the moment of purchase unless the buyer gives a start date. A daily one bought in advance is valid from midnight to midnight on the day chosen (e-vignette rates and validity, checked 14 October 2026).

That answers the common case of leaving at five the next morning: order the evening before with tomorrow as the start date, and the whole of tomorrow is covered. Through us you choose that date at checkout on the Hungarian e-vignette options page, and the earliest it can be is today.

Date it from the day you reach the first Hungarian motorway, not the day you leave home.

How the 10-day and the monthly are counted

The 10-day e-vignette is valid on its start day and the nine consecutive days after it, so one starting on 1 August covers the 10th as well and ends at midnight that night. The operator still calls it the weekly vignette, which is why some sites translate it as a week.

The monthly e-vignette runs from its start day until midnight at the end of the same-numbered day in the following month, or the last day of that month when it has no such day. One starting on 5 August ends at midnight on 5 September; one starting on 31 January 2027 ends on 28 February.

The annual e-vignette is different: it runs from purchase until midnight on 31 January of the following year, whenever in the year it is bought.

Count the days to your last Hungarian motorway, return leg included, before choosing between the 10-day and the monthly.

Joined the motorway without one: you have 60 minutes

A vignette never covers time before it was bought. The operator gives a driver who joined a tolled section in good faith up to 60 minutes from entry to buy one; after that the use is surcharged (Hungarian Public Roads Toll Division, checked 14 October 2026). A mobile inspection team that stops you inside those 60 minutes will sell you the vignette on the spot.

An order placed with us is registered with NÚSZ after payment and is not instant, so do not rely on it inside that hour. Buy at once from the official shop at ematrica.nemzetiutdij.hu, or from a reseller at the border.

If you are already on the motorway with no vignette, stop at the next safe place and buy it within the hour.

Check the register before the return leg

The e-matrica is a record against the plate, with nothing to display. NÚSZ's query page at nemzetiutdij.hu shows whether a plate has a valid vignette at a given moment, and the operator asks buyers to keep the confirmation for three years from the last day of validity.

Run the query after any purchase, ours included, and again before driving home, and buy another period only if the dates are not covered.
