Which Bulgarian charge does a motorhome, caravan or trailer pay?
A category M1 motorhome pays the e-vinetka regardless of its weight, which is the opposite of what most of Europe does with a heavy camper. A caravan or trailer needs a second e-vinetka of its own once the combination passes 3.5 tonnes.
Campers pay the vignette whatever they weigh
Campers of category M1 shown in the vehicle's registration certificate pay a vignette fee regardless of their total technically permissible maximum mass, a change that took effect on 13 February 2024 (Road Infrastructure Agency, checked 1 September 2026). Before it, a camper over 3.5 tonnes was pushed onto the distance toll.
Most countries move a vehicle to a heavier charge as its mass rises. Bulgaria moved campers the other way, so a five-tonne motorhome buys what a hatchback buys.
Read the category off the registration certificate, and if it says M1, buy the ordinary vehicle e-vinetka against the camper's own plate.
A caravan over the combined limit buys its own vignette
Bulgaria charges a trailer of a light vehicle separately once the gross combined weight of vehicle and trailer exceeds 3.5 tonnes, and the trailer's tariff matches the car's for every period (Road Infrastructure Agency product picker, checked 1 September 2026). A car towing a heavy caravan therefore pays the price twice over, not once.
The second vignette is bought against the trailer's own registration rather than the car's. Check what is on the trailer's plate before you travel, because that is the number the register will hold.
Weigh the combination against the 3.5 tonne line on the registration documents, and buy a second vignette only when it is over.
