Which drives cross the Tauern and Katschberg tunnels

The A10 between Salzburg and Villach is the usual way from southern Germany to Slovenia and Croatia, and the Austrian e‑vignette does not cover its tunnels: you need the e‑vignette for the rest of the motorway and this ticket for the tunnels.

Southbound, towards Slovenia and Croatia
Munich or Salzburg to Villach is one trip through both tunnels. Carry on through the Karawanken tunnel to Lake Bled, Ljubljana, Istria, Rijeka, Zagreb or Split, and that tunnel needs a ticket of its own. The same trip takes you to the Carinthian lakes around Villach and Klagenfurt.
Northbound, on the way home
Coming back north through the two tunnels is a second trip, so a return holiday needs the 2-trip ticket or two single trips.
Going through Graz instead
A drive on the A9 Pyhrn motorway towards Graz and Maribor misses the A10 altogether and passes the Bosruck and Gleinalm tunnels, which are tolled separately.

What a trip is

A trip is one passage through the toll station, in one direction. It can be redeemed within a year of the purchase date, and it is registered to your plate. You can change the plate and the country of registration before the trip is used.

What the shop asks for

ASFINAG asks for your licence plate and its country of registration, each typed twice to catch mistakes. It asks for nothing else: no start date, no vehicle category and no chassis number.

How this relates to the e‑vignette

This section toll is separate from the Austrian e‑vignette. The stretch it covers is excluded from the e‑vignette obligation, so an e‑vignette alone does not pay for it, and buying this ticket does not replace the e‑vignette either. The e‑vignette is still required for the rest of the Austrian motorway network. See the Austrian e‑vignette.

On a motorcycle or towing a trailer

On a motorcycle or towing a trailer, ASFINAG recommends using a staffed toll lane in the middle rather than an automatic one, because the camera that reads number plates does not always read them reliably on a motorcycle or a car with a trailer.
