What happens if you drive in Czechia without a valid vignette?
A driver using a charged Czech motorway without a valid e-vignette or exemption can be fined up to CZK 20,000. Police and customs check licence plates against the electronic register from patrol cars, control gates and rest areas.
The check follows the licence plate
The Police of the Czech Republic and the Customs Administration scan plates on charged motorways. They use camera-equipped patrol cars, fixed control gates and checks at rest stops and parking areas (eDálnice, checked 31 August 2026).
A receipt does not fix a plate entered incorrectly. Confirm that the registered country, plate and dates match the vehicle before relying on your Czech e-vignette.
Driving without cover can cost CZK 20,000
The published maximum for driving on a charged section without a valid e-vignette is CZK 20,000 (eDálnice and the Czech public administration portal, checked 31 August 2026). The penalty is separate from the price of the e-vignette you should have bought.
If you discover the mistake before entering a charged section, stop and register the correct vehicle first. Buying after a camera check does not cover the earlier journey.
False or unregistered exemptions carry different penalties
Submitting an exemption notice without being entitled to it can bring a fine of up to CZK 100,000. Failing to register an exemption when the law requires notice, or failing to report that an exemption ended within ten working days, can bring up to CZK 5,000 (eDálnice, checked 31 August 2026).
Do not choose an exemption or reduced fuel rate from the badge on the car alone. Check the official eligibility and notification rules before using the motorway.
