How the Bulgarian e-vignette works
How does the Bulgarian electronic vignette work?
It is a record against your licence plate in the Road Infrastructure Agency's register. Bulgaria dropped the windscreen sticker on 1 January 2019, cameras and mobile teams read plates, and you are not obliged to show anything at a roadside check.
There is nothing to display and nothing to carry
During a roadside check the owners and users of vehicles are not obliged to present a document proving the purchase of a vignette (Road Infrastructure Agency, checked 1 September 2026). Officers read the plate and query the register instead.
Bulgaria has been fully electronic since 1 January 2019 and was early to it in the region. There is no sticker to position, and nothing about a clean windscreen changes where you stand.
Keep your confirmation for your own records rather than for an officer.
The charge covers more than the motorways
The fee is for using the republican road network, which is the name of the tariff itself, and that network takes in first-class roads as well as motorways. Turning off the motorway onto a parallel main road does not leave the charge behind.
Sections inside town boundaries sit outside it, so local and urban driving is not what the e-vinetka is for.
Assume any numbered main road between Bulgarian towns is charged, and plan on holding a vignette for every day you drive between them.
The plate you type is the whole contract
No refund is payable where the category, country of registration, emission class or registration number has not been properly declared (Road Infrastructure Agency terms and conditions, checked 1 September 2026). There is no correction step after payment, which makes this stricter than it first looks.
