Which roads in Slovakia need a vignette?
Do you need a vignette for every road in Slovakia?
No. Only marked sections of the D motorways and the R expressways are charged, so ordinary first-class roads cost nothing and six city bypasses have been free since August 2024. Bratislava is the exception worth knowing: both motorway approaches to it, from Austria and from Hungary, are charged.
The charge follows the road class, not the border
The charged network is defined as specified sections of motorways and expressways marked by the relevant traffic signs (eZnamka network, checked 2 September 2026). Crossing into Slovakia does not itself create a liability, and the D and R numbers are what to look for.
Everything below that class is outside the charge. A driver who leaves the R1 south of Banská Bystrica for the first-class road through the mountains has left the charge behind, at the cost of a slower drive.
Plan the route by road number and buy only if a D or R section is on it.
Six city bypasses have been free since August 2024
More than 200 kilometres of motorway around Bratislava, Nitra, Košice, Prešov, Poprad and Žilina were taken out of the charge on 1 August 2024 (eZnamka, checked 2 September 2026). Most of the D4 around Bratislava is in that group.
The start and end of a free section are signed like any other rule of the road: one sign for a motorway section without payment, another for a section with payment. Watch for them rather than assuming a whole motorway is one or the other.
Check the current network map before a trip that only clips a bypass, because sections move in and out of the charge.
The two motorway approaches to Bratislava are charged, and the bypass around them is not
This is the exception that catches people. The D4 from the Austrian border at Jarovce to the D2 junction is 2 kilometres and is charged, and the D2 on from that junction to Čunovo at the Hungarian border is 9 kilometres and is charged (eZnamka network, checked 2 September 2026). Both sit at the end of a bypass that is otherwise free.
Eleven charged kilometres are easy to dismiss and they are where the checks are. eZnamka reported in July 2026 that most recorded violations were at the Jarovce and Kittsee crossing.

The city centre is still reachable on ordinary roads
Leaving the motorway at the border and taking the first-class road into Bratislava touches no charged section, so a visit that parks in the centre and drives nowhere else can genuinely need nothing. That is a real option, not a technicality.
It stops being one the moment the itinerary uses the D1 towards Trnava, the D2 north towards Kúty, or either border approach above. Decide on the whole trip rather than the arrival, because one motorway hop on the third day puts the vehicle back inside the charge for that day.
