Does a rental car need a Slovak e-vignette?
Yes, unless the rental company has already paid for that exact plate. The Slovak vignette is registered to a licence plate and is not transferable between vehicles, so the answer is on the rental agreement rather than in the hire company's brochure.
Check the plate on the agreement, not the desk's assurance
The central records hold the vignette against one vehicle's registration number, its country of registration and the type of vehicle (Act 488/2013, checked 2 September 2026). A fleet-wide claim at the counter is not the same as a record against the car you are handed.
Ask for the payment confirmation or the register entry, and read the plate on it against the plate on the car. A car hired outside Slovakia is the case least likely to carry one already, because the vignette is worth buying for a fleet only where the fleet drives.
A vignette does not move to a replacement car
eZnamka states that an electronic vignette is not transferable between vehicles or trailers except in specific cases the law names (checked 2 September 2026). A breakdown swap mid-hire therefore leaves the new plate uncovered even though the rental is the same contract.
If the car changes, treat it as a fresh decision and buy for the new plate before rejoining a charged road. A 1-day vignette covers a single day's driving while the paperwork is sorted out.
