Hungary HGV toll over 3.5 t: HU-GO, route ticket and rates

Every figure below is from the Toll Division of Magyar Közút, which runs hu-go.hu and nemzetiutdij.hu, read on 24 September 2026.

• Who pays HU-GO: goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, in axle categories J2 to J5, and buses over 3.5 tonnes.
• Who does not: motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes, which buy a D2 e-vignette since 1 January 2026.
• Where: motorways, expressways and main roads, a wider network than the e-vignette's.
• Rate: the infrastructure charge alone is 65.89 Ft per km for a J2 vehicle on a motorway and 170.94 Ft for J5, gross, before the external-cost charge is added.
• Without an on-board unit: a route ticket for one planned route, paid by card, valid for 300 minutes from purchase.
• Driving unpaid: fines from 61,000 Ft for a J2 vehicle up to 281,000 Ft for J5.
• toll.one sells the Hungarian e-vignette for cars. It does not sell HU-GO or route tickets.

HU-GO covers goods vehicles with a maximum authorised total mass over 3.5 tonnes, grouped by axle count into J2 (two axles), J3, J4 and J5 (five or more). Buses over 3.5 tonnes joined on 1 April 2024; for them the infrastructure charge follows the vehicle type, M2 up to 5 tonnes or M3 above it, rather than the axles.

Motorhomes went the other way. From 1 January 2026 every recreational vehicle is in the e-vignette system, and one over 3.5 tonnes needs an e-vignette in category D2 (Hungarian Public Roads Toll Division, checked 24 September 2026). A D2 vehicle towing a trailer needs a separate category U e-vignette for it, while a D1 car's trailer needs none.

Read the vehicle category in field J of the registration certificate before deciding which system applies.

Each tolled section is charged for its length at a rate made of two parts: an infrastructure charge set by axle category and road type, and an external-cost charge for air pollution, noise and CO2 that depends on the EURO class and on whether the section is suburban or interurban. The published figures include VAT.

The infrastructure charge for a J2 vehicle is 65.89 Ft per km on a motorway or expressway and 36.03 Ft on a main road; for J5 it is 170.94 and 106.16 Ft (toll rates from 1 January 2026). The external-cost charge is added on top, and falls as the EURO class gets cleaner.

The HU-GO network is not the e-vignette's network. It includes main roads that a car uses without any vignette, so leaving the motorway does not by itself take a lorry off the toll.

Price a route in the official toll calculator at utdijkalkulacio.hu before you travel.

A route ticket is bought by bank card at hu-go.hu without registering, for one route in one direction, driven without interruption, by the vehicle described at purchase. You give the plate and its country code, the vehicle category and EURO class, and the route, and the price is calculated for exactly that.

The moment of purchase is the start of its validity. From 1 May 2026 a route ticket is valid for 300 minutes from purchase, up from 120, and it entitles you to use the network only once payment is confirmed on hu-go.hu. It cannot be changed, transferred or refunded.

Buy it at the start of the drive, not the night before, and save the confirmation until the trip is over.

With a HU-GO registration, road use is declared only through an on-board unit, and has been since 1 January 2024. The units come from audited toll declaration operators, fleet management companies under contract with the toll operator, or from an EETS provider, and the toll is taken from a HU-GO balance topped up by card or bank transfer. Post-payment is possible under a separate contract.

For an overweight or oversized vehicle the operator recommends an on-board unit rather than route tickets.

Set the unit up before the first trip if the vehicle will cross Hungary more than occasionally.

Portals and mobile units check every vehicle around the clock. Using the network without paying first costs a J2 vehicle 61,000 Ft if it stops offending within two hours of first detection, 140,000 Ft if it is caught again between the second and fourth hour, and 218,000 Ft between the fourth and eighth. For J5 the same bands are 91,000, 187,000 and 281,000 Ft (2026 fine rates).

Declaring a lower axle or environmental category than the real one is fined too, from 48,000 Ft for J2.

If a problem shows up on the road, stop and buy a valid ticket before driving on, because the later fines are the larger ones.
