Driving to Jasná from Poland or Czechia: where the Slovak vignette applies
Do I need a Slovak vignette to drive to Jasná?
For the motorway part only, and from Poland you can leave it out. Jasná sends drivers to the Liptovský Mikuláš exit of the D1, and eZnamka lists the D1 from Ivachnová to Poprad-Západ among the sections that need a vignette. The first-class roads from the Chyžné crossing down the Orava valley to Ružomberok and on to Liptovský Mikuláš carry no charge, because in Slovakia only marked motorway and expressway sections do.
The D1 is charged from Ivachnová, the road beside it is not
eZnamka's list of sections that need a vignette includes the D1 from Ivachnová to Poprad-Západ. The Liptovský Mikuláš exit sits inside it, so a driver who joins the D1 at Ivachnová or earlier pays from the moment of joining.
The first-class road that runs alongside it through the Liptov basin is not on the list, and no first-class road ever is. Taking it to Liptovský Mikuláš is slower through the villages but owes nothing.
From the exit, Jasná's own directions run Liptovský Mikuláš, Demänovská Dolina, Lúčky, Záhradky, Biela Púť and Chopok. If the D1 is part of the plan, the 1-day Slovak vignette covers one calendar day, so an arrival day and a departure day a week apart are either two of them or one 10-day vignette.
From Poland, Chyžné costs nothing and Skalité does
The crossing at Chyžné leads down the Orava valley through Trstená, Tvrdošín and Dolný Kubín to Ružomberok on first-class road. None of it appears on eZnamka's list, so a Polish car can reach Liptovský Mikuláš that way without a Slovak vignette at all.
The crossing at Skalité is the opposite case. The D3 from Čadca and Bukov to the Polish border at Skalité is on the list, so a car entering there is on charged motorway from the first kilometre.
Choose the crossing before you choose the vignette, and check which one your satnav has picked before you reach the border.
From Czechia, the D1 has a gap at Žilina and another at Ružomberok
A car coming from Czechia by Žilina meets the D1 in pieces. The list charges it from Bratislava-Východ to Hričovské Podhradie, leaves out the Žilina bypass, which has been free since August 2024 as which Slovak roads need a vignette explains, charges it again from Lietavská Lúčka to Turany, and names no section between Turany and Ivachnová.
So the drive from Žilina to Jasná is charged on two stretches, Lietavská Lúčka to Turany and Ivachnová to Liptovský Mikuláš, with uncharged road around Ružomberok between them. One vignette covers both, since it is registered to the plate for the whole network.
Two sides of Chopok, and car parks that close when full
Chopok is reached from both sides. The northern approach from Liptovský Mikuláš serves the car parks at Otupné, Biela Púť, Záhradky, Lúčky and Pavčina Lehota; the southern approach from Banská Bystrica and Brezno serves Krupová, Trangoška and Srdiečko.
Attendants close each car park when it is full and send drivers down to P5 at Pavčina Lehota, the largest on the north side, from where shuttle and ski buses run up. Záhradky is paid and is not run by the resort. The resort asks for cars to be out of its car parks by 9:10 pm for maintenance, and does not allow a motorhome or caravan to be left in them outside the official caravan spaces.
Jasná asks drivers to use snow chains, especially in bad weather. Carry a set that fits and arrive early on a Saturday.
