Slovenia HGV toll over 3.5 t: DarsGo unit, rates and fines

Every figure below is from DARS and its DarsGo portal, or from the Road Tolling Act, read on 24 September 2026.

• Who pays: any vehicle over 3,500 kg maximum permissible weight, including buses and heavy motorhomes.
• Where: the motorways and expressways, about 625 km in 128 tolled sections, the Karavanke tunnel and certain sections of main and regional roads.
• Rate from 1 April 2026 for a two-axle EURO VI vehicle in CO2 class 1 on an interurban section: €0.126037 per km before VAT. Four or more axles: €0.287418.
• Device: a DarsGo unit, €10 including VAT per unit, tied to one registration number.
• Vignette: not needed. The e-vinjeta is for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, with or without a trailer.
• Driving past a toll point without a unit: a fine of €800 for the driver under the Road Tolling Act.
• toll.one sells the e-vignette for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. It does not sell DarsGo or the unit.

DARS splits Slovenia's tolling by weight alone: up to 3,500 kg maximum permissible weight is the e-vignette, above it is DarsGo. The e-vignette covers a light vehicle with or without a trailer, so a car towing a heavy caravan still needs only the e-vinjeta.

A motorhome, bus or coach over the line is a DarsGo vehicle like any lorry. DARS files heavy vehicles into three toll classes by axle count, R2, R3 and R4, and the driver sets the axle count on the unit before each drive, with or without a trailer.

Check the weight on the registration document before choosing between the two systems.

Each of the 128 sections is charged separately when the vehicle passes under its gantry. Since 1 April 2026 the rate combines an infrastructure charge with a new external-cost charge for air pollution and noise, and it is higher on suburban sections than on interurban ones.

Two stretches carry a mark-up to co-finance the second track of the Divača to Koper railway: 5% of the average infrastructure charge between Šentrupert and Ljubljana, and 15% between Ljubljana and Koper. On the Ljubljana to Koper stretch a four-axle vehicle in EURO 0 on a suburban section pays €0.824542 per km, the dearest rate in the R4 tariff (DarsGo tariffs valid from 1 April 2026).

The emission classes have to be proved at registration. Without a certificate for the EURO class the vehicle is registered as EURO 0, and without proof of the CO2 class it is placed in class 1, so bring the COC or CIF document.

You register the vehicle in the e-DarsGo portal or at a DarsGo service point, with the registration certificate and the emission certificates. A customer with an address in the EU can complete everything online, pay the €10 administrative cost by card and receive the unit by post. Everyone else collects it at a service point, and pre-registering online first shortens the visit.

Prepaid use loads credit before the trip: at service points in cash or by card, or online by card from €10 a time up to a balance of €1,000. Post-paid use needs a fuel card linked to the vehicle account, or a deferral contract with DARS backed by a financial guarantee.

The unit beeps once at each gantry when the toll is paid. Two beeps mean visit the next service point, for example because credit is low; four mean the passage was not paid and a violation has been recorded.

Top up before the balance runs out, and stop at the next service point on two beeps.

The Road Tolling Act lets a vehicle entering Slovenia on a toll road without a unit drive to the first DarsGo service point on that road. There you state where you entered, pay the toll for that distance, get the unit and keep the receipt until you leave the toll road. DARS lists DarsGo service offices at Ljubljana, Obrežje, Fernetiči, Gruškovje and Hrušica.

The same law works in reverse on the way out. You can return the unit at a service point before leaving the toll road, name your exit and prepay the remaining distance to it.

Plan the first stop before you cross the border, and keep every receipt until you are off the motorway.

DarsGo supervisors check for the unit, the vehicle data on it and the toll class set by the driver, on the road and through cameras and gantries. Under the Road Tolling Act a driver who passes a toll point without a unit, with a wrong emission class or with a unit issued to another plate is fined €800. Setting the wrong toll class costs €400 for each calendar day, and carrying on past a service point with no credit or a broken unit costs €1,000.

A company operating the vehicle faces €2,000 for the emission-class and plate offences, and its responsible person €800.

Check the axle setting and the balance before every drive rather than after a stop.
