Austria vignette 2027: no more sticker, digital only

There is no windscreen sticker for 2027, and nothing else about the obligation changes: the same motorways and expressways need a vignette, and a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes still needs one before it joins them. ASFINAG sold the bright red 2026 sticker as the last one, and a 2025 amendment to the Federal Roads Toll Act (BGBl. I No. 83/2025) makes the digital vignette the only form from the 2027 vignette year.

The dates that matter, each from ASFINAG or the rules it publishes:

• 30 November 2026: the last start date you can choose for a 2026 digital 1-day, 10-day or 2-month vignette, because the new vignette year and its new prices begin the next day.
• 1 December 2026: the 2027 vignette year begins. A 2027 annual vignette is valid from this day until 31 January 2028.
• 14 January 2027: the last day to buy a 2027 annual vignette online from ASFINAG as a consumer and have it valid on 1 February, because of the 18-day wait.
• 31 January 2027: the last day a 2026 annual vignette is valid, the 2026 sticker included.
• 1 February 2027: only digital vignettes are valid in Austria.

Go to the same kind of counter: selected petrol stations and tobacconists, the ÖAMTC, ARBÖ and ADAC offices and the ASFINAG toll stations sell the digital vignette, and so do ASFINAG vending machines at some rest areas. Bought there, it is valid straight away. ASFINAG counted 3,500 outlets selling the digital vignette in October 2025 and said it would add more before the switch.

Instead of a sticker you get an order confirmation, and it is what shows the plate the vignette is registered to. Driving on a vignette road with the plate registered wrongly is an administrative offence in itself, so read the plate and the country of registration on the confirmation before you leave the counter, and keep it until the vignette has expired.

A 2-month or annual vignette bought online from ASFINAG as a consumer is valid from the 18th day after the purchase at the earliest. Consumer law gives you 14 days to withdraw from an online purchase, and ASFINAG adds three days for a withdrawal sent by post. Its own example: an annual vignette bought in the toll shop on 15 January is valid from 2 February.

The 1-day vignette and the 10-day vignette carry no such wait, even bought online, and neither does any vignette bought at a counter, a toll station or a vending machine. So a driver who leaves it late has two ways out: buy the short vignette the trip actually needs, or buy the annual one in person. For 2027 the date to remember is 14 January. Every 2026 annual vignette ends on 31 January 2027, and ASFINAG gave the same 14 January cut-off in its reminder for 2026. Buy the 2027 annual online by then, or buy it at a counter.

A 2026 annual vignette, the red sticker or the digital one, is valid until 31 January 2027 inclusive, so a driver who has one needs nothing new for December or January. The sticker stays valid for that period as long as it stays properly stuck to the windscreen: removed and stuck back on, it loses its validity.

A sticker cannot be turned into a digital vignette during its validity, and ASFINAG only lets drivers change form from the following year. For 2027 that choice is gone, because the following year is digital. Put 31 January 2027 in the calendar as the day the sticker stops counting.

ASFINAG has not yet published the 2027 prices (checked 24 September 2026). By law the vignette tariff is adjusted each year to the harmonised index of consumer prices and changes on 1 December; for 2026 it rose by 2.9 per cent, and ASFINAG announced those prices on 8 October 2025. The sticker and the digital vignette cost the same, so losing the sticker does not change what you pay. You can buy directly from ASFINAG, in its toll shop or its app, and pay the official price and nothing more. Until the 2027 prices appear, these are the official 2026 prices, valid since 1 December 2025 and including 20 per cent VAT:

• Car: 1-day 9.60 euro, 10-day 12.80 euro, 2-month 32.00 euro, annual 106.80 euro.
• Motorcycle: 1-day 3.80 euro, 10-day 5.10 euro, 2-month 12.80 euro, annual 42.70 euro.

Enforcement reads the plate, not the windscreen. ASFINAG checks with its own service and control staff and with automatic control cameras that are mobile and change location, and the camera systems keep data only on vehicles without a valid vignette. In January 2026 ASFINAG put the substitute toll for a driver caught without a valid vignette at 200 euro.

A new car or a new plate is where the digital vignette differs most from the sticker, which could never move to another vehicle. Before its validity begins, any digital vignette can have its plate changed free of charge in your ASFINAG account. Once valid, only the annual vignette can move: once per validity period without giving a reason, or for listed reasons such as theft, total loss or a move to another district, and only while the registration holder stays the same. The processing fee is 18 euro, which ASFINAG refunds for some of those reasons, theft and total loss among them. A valid 1-day, 10-day or 2-month vignette cannot be moved at all.

Holders of transferable plates (Wechselkennzeichen) need one digital vignette for up to three vehicles, where the sticker meant one per windscreen. If you bought through an online sales partner rather than from ASFINAG, make any plate or date change with that partner.

From 2027 a hire car shows nothing on the windscreen, so ask the rental company which dates its vignette covers, or enter the country and plate in ASFINAG's validity query at evidenz.asfinag.at, which lists the digital vignettes registered to that plate. A foreign car needs a vignette on the same terms as an Austrian one. When you buy, enter the plate exactly as it is on the car and the country it is registered in, because the vignette is registered to that pair. The end of the sticker concerns the vignette alone. Six stretches carry their own section toll instead: the Gleinalm and Bosruck tunnels on the A9, the Tauern and Katschberg tunnels on the A10, the Karawanken tunnel on the A11, the Brenner on the A13 and the Arlberg tunnel on the S16. You need no vignette between their toll stations and a separate ticket for them, bought at the toll station or as a digital section toll from ASFINAG. Plan for both if your drive crosses one.
