Austria HGV toll (Lkw-Maut) over 3.5 t: GO-Box, rates and fines

Every figure below is ASFINAG's own, read on go-maut.at on 24 September 2026.

• Who pays: lorries, buses and motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes maximum technically permissible laden mass, the F.1 figure on the registration certificate.
• Where: all motorways and expressways, including the section toll segments, charged section by section.
• 2026 rate for a two-axle lorry or motorhome, EURO VI, CO2 class 1: €0.2774 per km before 20% VAT. Four or more axles: €0.5724.
• Device: a GO-Box for a €12 processing fee, or a Toll Collect or EETS on-board unit.
• Vignette: not needed. The vignette is for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.
• Unpaid toll: a substitute toll of €200 or €270, and administrative fines of €300 to €3,000 if that is not paid either.
• toll.one sells the vignette for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. It does not sell GO-Maut or the GO-Box.

ASFINAG decides by the maximum technically permissible laden mass in field F.1 of the registration certificate. The permissible weight in F.2 and the weight on the day do not decide it. A van plated down to 3.5 tonnes in F.2 but with a higher F.1 is a GO-Maut vehicle.

One transitional rule softens that. A vehicle first registered before 1 December 2023, whose F.2 was set at no more than 3.5 tonnes before that date, counts as a light vehicle until 31 January 2029, but only once you have proved it to ASFINAG.

A motorhome over 3.5 tonnes is on GO-Maut like a lorry, and a bus over 3.5 tonnes has had its own, lower rate since 1 January 2025. A car or van up to 3.5 tonnes towing a caravan stays on the vignette: only the towing vehicle counts, and the trailer's weight does not matter.

Each short section of motorway has its own price, charged when the vehicle passes the gantry above it. The rate per kilometre depends on the number of axles, the EURO emission class, the CO2 emission class and whether the vehicle is a bus.

The 2026 rates run from €0.0587 per km for a two-axle zero-emission vehicle to €0.6654 for a lorry with four or more axles in EURO 0 to III, all before VAT (ASFINAG GO toll rates, valid from 1 January 2026). Two stretches cost more: the Unterinntal part of the A12 from the Kufstein border to Innsbruck-Amras adds 25%, and the A13 Brenner has a separate night rate from 10pm to 5am.

The better rates have to be proved. Evidence of the EURO and CO2 class is due within 30 days of registering, and a vehicle without it is charged at the highest rate. ASFINAG has no CO2 reference values for motorhomes and buses yet, so both are placed in CO2 class 1 unless they are zero-emission.

The GO-Box is a loan device from ASFINAG, collected at any GO point of sale in Austria or abroad for a €12 processing fee and returned when you no longer need it. Customers of ASFINAG's GO Direkt service can have it posted within the EU for €14.90.

Pre-Pay runs on toll credit loaded at the point of sale, at least €150 and at most €750 a time, in cash, by card or by fuel card. Post-Pay settles afterwards by credit card, fuel card or a GO Direkt account. A lorry already fitted with a Toll Collect unit for Germany, or an EETS unit, can use that instead.

Set the axle count on the box before each trip and whenever a trailer goes on or comes off. A motorhome or bus is the exception: trailer axles do not count for either.

Collect the box before the first gantry, and keep the vehicle declaration from the point of sale in the cab.

The GO-Box beeps at each gantry, and a wrong signal means the toll was not taken. ASFINAG lets you pay it retroactively at a GO point of sale within 5 hours and 100 km, or within 96 hours by phone or in the SelfCare portal if only part was paid, for example because too few axles were set.

After that ASFINAG claims a substitute toll: €270 when the toll was not paid at all or the evidence of rate characteristics came late, €200 when it was paid in part or the plate or box does not match the vehicle declaration. Leaving that unpaid, four weeks after a written request, exposes you to administrative fines of €300 to €3,000 (ASFINAG, checked 24 September 2026).

Listen for the signal at every gantry and settle any shortfall the same day.

toll.one does not sell GO-Maut, the GO-Box or anything for a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes. The only places to set up the toll are ASFINAG's GO points of sale, go-maut.at and the approved on-board unit providers.
