Slovakia HGV toll over 3.5 t: e-mýto unit, rates and who pays

Every figure below is from emyto.sk, the portal of the toll system run by SkyToll for the National Motorway Company, read on 24 September 2026.

• Who pays: motor vehicles and combinations over 3,500 kg maximum permissible laden mass, and buses over 3.5 tonnes for more than nine people.
• Who does not: M1 vehicles, including heavy motorhomes, and an M1 or N1 vehicle towing an O1 or O2 trailer.
• Where: specified sections of motorways, expressways and first-, second- and third-class roads, about 8,310 km from 1 January 2026.
• Motorway rate from 1 July 2025 for a lorry of 12 tonnes or more with five or more axles, EURO VI, CO2 class 1: €0.2677 per km before VAT. A lorry of 3.5 to 12 tonnes, EURO VI: €0.1039.
• Device: an on-board unit from a contact, distribution or border distribution point, lent against a deposit.
• Prepaid credit: at least €50 per cash payment, with a minimum balance of €12.

Act No. 474/2013 makes any motor vehicle or combination over 3,500 kg maximum permissible laden mass liable, with two exceptions: every M1 vehicle, whatever it weighs, and an M1 or N1 vehicle towing an O1 or O2 trailer. A heavy camper registered as M1 therefore never pays e-mýto, and a light van with a trailer is not pulled onto it by the combined weight.

A bus needs both conditions at once: over 3.5 tonnes, and built for more than nine people including the driver. A minibus under 3.5 tonnes with ten or more seats buys a vignette instead, and a heavy vehicle with nine seats or fewer is not a toll bus.

Read the category in the registration document before deciding, because weight alone does not settle it.

The toll for each section is its length multiplied by a rate that depends on the road type, the weight band, the number of axles for lorries of 12 tonnes or more, the EURO class and, since 1 July 2025, the CO2 emission class (Government Regulation No. 418/2024).

On motorways the lorry rates run from €0.0907 per km for a zero-emission vehicle of 3.5 to 12 tonnes to €0.4940 for a four-axle lorry of 12 tonnes or more in EURO 0, all before VAT. Some specified sections carry a zero rate, but a toll vehicle must still have a working unit on them.

Border distribution points, at or near the crossings, register the vehicle, sign the prepaid contract, hand over the unit against a deposit and take the first credit. In the prepaid mode the driver, not only the vehicle operator, may collect and return the unit.

Cash payments of prepaid toll start at €50 including VAT, and the balance must not fall below €12. When it reaches that level the unit signals it, and the driver must top up at the nearest point or leave the tolled roads. Unused credit is refunded in cash only up to €100; above that it goes to the operator's bank account.

Return the unit undamaged at the end of the trip to recover the deposit.

When a check finds the toll unpaid, a supplementary toll is charged, and if the distance actually driven cannot be established it is calculated for 650 km at the vehicle's rate. Driving without paying, without a unit on zero-rate sections, or with wrong vehicle data in the unit are offences under the Act, and the vehicle operator's offences go to a district authority. The portal publishes no fine amounts.

Keep the unit switched on and correctly set for the whole time the vehicle is in Slovakia.
